Today is the World Day of Prayer!
This a global movement aiming to bring together women of various races and cultures to bring closer fellowship, understanding and action through a day of prayer. The day is celebrated annually on the first Friday in March.
Over the past 6 years, the World Day of Prayer service was translated into an estimated 90 languages and had over 16 million participants in over 170 countries.
Participating women are encouraged to become aware of other countries and cultures, praying with them and for them, bringing a sense of empathy and solidarity.
Every year, the service focuses on a different country and a specific theme. Committees of that country prepare the order of worship on these themes to be used on the next World Day of Prayer. On the first Friday of March, that country becomes the focus of prayer and understanding of women across the world.
This year, the country of choice is Slovenia, one of the smallest countries in Central Europe. Slovenia has a population of two million, who speak Slovenian, Hungarian and Italian.
The theme of the day is “Come – Everything is Ready!” The invitation is grounded in the parable that Jesus told about a great dinner which was attended by the ones called off the streets, as the ones invited excused themselves. The community formed around the table is not enough to fill the house – there is still room. Who are missing from the table in your community?
