Saint Patrick’s Day, named for the foremost patron saint of Ireland, is celebrated today, Sunday 17 March, which marks the saint’s traditional death date.
With 70 million people of Irish descent across the globe through the Irish diaspora, the cultural and religious festival is celebrated globally, in more countries than any other national festival!
Common traditions include the wearing of green attire, representative of the three-leaved shamrock Saint Patrick used to explain the Holy Trinity, as well as parades, Irish traditional music sessions, banquets and dances and church services.
Since 2010, many famous landmarks have been lit up in green light in honour of St Patrick’s Day. The Sydney Opera House and the Sky Tower in Auckland were the first, with over 300 landmarks in 50 countries since!
