Let’s celebrate diversity and tolerance, and the birthday of same-sex marriage in Australia!
It is a year today since the announcement of the results of the plebiscite legalising same-sex marriage. What an achievement. Parliament abrogated their responsibility, but Malcolm Turnbull, to his credit, went ahead with the plebiscite and the vote was a resounding YES in favour of tolerance and diversity.
Since that time there have been 5,420 same-sex weddings performed across Australia, including almost 2,000 in NSW.
One of the notable ones is coming up early next year. Former Justice of the High Court, Michael Kirby, will be celebrating his wedding with his partner, Johan van Vloten, on 11 February 2019, the 50th anniversary of the day that they met.
Here is a recent article in The Guardian celebrating the marriage of Michael Kirby and Johan van Vloten. You can read our blog post from August last year for more details about the same-sex marriage debate in Australia.
