When we start a relationship with a new partner, we like to think that it will last forever. At the very least, we tell ourselves, if the relationship does break down we will be able to deal with it in a fair and mature way, and maintain our respect and dignity when we part ways with our partner. Perhaps we will even be able to be friends after the relationship is over.
Unfortunately, sometimes life doesn’t quite work out the way we hope it will.
A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald, written by Sydney divorce lawyer Fidan Shevket, discusses the benefits of getting a Binding Financial Agreement (colloquially known as a Prenuptial Agreement) to protect your assets and interests in case of a breakdown in your relationship.
As a divorce lawyer practicing in Sydney for the last 15 years, I have learnt something important: the only person you can count on is yourself.
You can’t trust your partner to “do the right thing” or to be “fair” if there is a breakup. People change when a relationship comes to an end. I have seen it.
