Today, 9 November, is Cambodia’s National Day. For those of you who are from Cambodia, or who may have visited there, it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with a fantastic history going back thousands of years including the amazing Khmer Empire and the city of Angkor.
Cambodia gained its independence from France on 9 November 1953 after 100 years of French rule. But then, during and immediately after the Vietnam War, it went though the most tragic period of its history, comprising genocide, ethnic cleansing and total destruction of culture.
Cambodia remains a poor country dominated by the Mekong River, but it is growing rapidly. As one of Australia’s nearest neighbours, it is certainly a country worth visiting and celebrating for its history and beauty.
