Today is the UN’s International Day for Tolerance, a global campaign aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of intolerance. It highlights the importance of reducing racial prejudice, hatred and negative perceptions of refugees and migrants.
In an era of increasing conflict and divide among people all across the world, tolerance is more important than ever. Like the United Nations, one of Martin Bullock Lawyers’ key values is that of tolerance.
Tolerance is important because it is what makes us human. Being tolerant allows us to appreciate the diversity of the world around us. Here are some quotes that remind us all of the value of being tolerant:
Tolerance is an act of humanity, which we must nurture and enact each in own lives every day, to rejoice in the diversity that makes us strong and the values that bring us together.
― Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO
No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.
― Nelson Mandela
In the practice of tolerance, one’s enemy is the best teacher.
― Dalai Lama XIV
If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships – the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.
– Franklin D.Roosevelt
My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.
– Archbishop Desmond Tutu
