Diwali, aka the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant and most popular Hindu celebrations around the world. With over 450,000 Hindus living in Australia today, Diwali has continued to grow in Australia and has now become a significant part of our national calendar.
Diwali is widely celebrated by a variety of peoples, and for each it has a different spiritual significance, but across all cultures it is a celebration of light triumphing over darkness. It is a time for contemplation and introspection, to shine a light within ourselves and dispel our own darkness and personal demons.
Last week, hundreds of people turned out at Parramatta Park to celebrate Diwali with food, music, lights and fireworks. This was the 20th anniversary of the festival being held at Parramatta Park, and each year brings with it a bigger turnout and more vibrant celebrations.
