Our first responders do a great job and deserve to feel safe when helping our community.
New laws set to come into force on 1 September 2018 are designed to keep our emergency service workers safe when they are stopped on the road.
Motorists will be required to slow down to 40km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle which is displaying red and blue flashing lights. This rule also applies to motorists travelling on the opposite side of the road unless it is divided by a median strip.
Under the new rules, motorists will also be required to give way to any pedestrian on foot within the immediate area of the emergency vehicle.
A fine of $488.00 and three demerit points will apply to motorists who do not comply with the new rules.
You can read more about the new laws at the Transport for NSW website.
