Here is the most romantic story you will hear this Valentine’s Day!
Three days ago, on 11 February 2019, former Justice of the High Court of Australia, Michael Kirby, celebrated his wedding to Johan van Vloten. It was the 50th anniversary of the day they met.
Kirby is in internationally respected legal mind who dedicated his career to fight for those without a voice, including Indigenous Australians and refugees. He was the youngest man ever appointed to federal judicial office in Australia, and the first to come out as gay. He has often spoken publicly in support of gay rights and the equality movement.
Kirby is a larger than life figure who has had a profound impact on the legal system in Australia. After decades of fighting for the rights of others, it is fitting that he was finally able to exercise his own basic right to marry the man he loves.
Greg Martin says:
After 50 years spent in a loving relationship, what a wonderful thing it is that these two men can finally express their love to the world with pride and dignity.
An amazing win for love, for good lawyers and for good people.
Congratulations to Michael Kirby and to Johan van Vloten!
